Tecon/SC

By the end of January, 550 employees, employed by Andrade Gutierrez, will be active in building Tecon Santa Catarina, in Itapoá. During this stage of the construction, the construction company concentrates its activities in carrying out the services sea inward to set up the bridge and the pier, and in building precast elements. The first bridge unit, being 22 meters long, has already been finished.

15% of the approximate number of 800 piles, used to support the terminal bridge and pier, have already been driven into the ground. Besides the piles, the concrete producing central at the site is also producing 2,500 precast elements, in U format, to close the upper bridge slab, as well as 670 precast beams. The total concrete volume to be used for the construction is of around 45,000 m3.

During the months of June and July, 2009, the construction company Construtora Andrade Gutierrez will employ around 700 people at the construction site. The undertaking’s schedule estimates the construction to be finished by the end of this year and to begin its operation during the first semester of 2010.

What Tecon SC is

Tecon Santa Catarina is a privately owned terminal of combined use (own and third party cargoes), exclusively for container handling; its initial handling capacity being of 300 thousand containers/year.

Having been projected to be a milestone in productivity and safety among Brazilian ports, Tecon Santa Catarina’s container handling will be monitored throughout all of the operation phases. It will make use of world-class technology as the DGPS (Differential GPS) and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), besides operating in accordance to the ISPS code – international ship and port facility security code, and there will also be state of the art equipment as 4 Post Panamax ships to shore container gantries, 11 rubber-tyred gantries, RTG type, and 26 terminal tractors to handle containers in the yard.

Conceived to offer new logistic options in the state that presents the sixth best export performance in Brazil, Tecon Santa Catarina follows the trend of the most modern world-class ports worldwide, with a minimum of environmental interference. Two bridges will leave the container yard advancing around 230 meters into the sea to reach the pier where the three wharfs are.

This way, the Figueira do Pontal beach, its fauna, flora and bathing area will remain untouched. Besides continuing to being open to public access, Tecon SC will sponsor the urbanization of the beach surrounding the port, including side-walk pavement, benches, gardening, lighting and a special space for ship observation.

Choosing Itapoá for the establishment of this enterprise was based on its strategic location, at the border of two important southern states, in the Babitonga Bay that already has other port operations. The 16 meter natural berth depth existing in this region will allow Tecon Santa Catarina to suitably welcome large ships, improving the flow of such in South and Southeast Brazil. And it shall characterize the terminal as an export and import confluence port, which will admit large ships from abroad to re-distribute cargo through coastal shipping to other ports in Brazil and South America – especially Argentina and Uruguay. Road access to the port is over state road SC-415, which is getting pavement and improvements to better serve the transport demands by land to the terminal.

Shareholders of Tecon SC are (1) Portinvest Participações (Conglomerado Battistella and Logística Brasil – Fundo de Investimento e Participações, which is managed by BRZ Investimentos) and (2) Aliança Navegação e Logística (Hamburg Süd).
